ALLAN -- Her Infinite Variety
by Roshan G. Shahani
Published by Sparrow (Sound & Picture Archives for Research on Women)
One of the great
needs felt by scholars in women's Studies has been to explore the relationship
with the mother as a part of situating our own selves. Among the major
concerns in articles, stories, and discussions by women, has been the
mother's role in moulding her daughter and the manner in which she might
have made or marred the dreams of the younger woman. Many myths about
motherhood, about a mother's life, and the person of the mother, have
been dispelled in this process of rediscovering identities and bearings.
Roshan's book is a personal history of her mother and her relationship
with her. At the same time, the story spans nearly an entire century
of a Parsi family and its social life. Allan comes across as a sensitive
woman with her love for poetry, music and travel. She is also a sensitive
woman who judges people and events from her own independent perspective.
She can be painfully candid but also amazingly gentle. In a way, the
book is not only about Allan, but about the family's perception of her
as a mother and as a person. For Roshan, the act of writing was a way
of exorcising the sad ghosts of the past and of making her mother whole
again.
