BOM BAY TIME
by Thrity Umrigar
Bombay Time (Picador/St.
Martin's Press, July 2001) is a rich, moving and deeply felt novel about
the longtime residents of a Parsi apartment building in Bombay and their
love-hate relationship with the city of their birth. As they gather
at the wedding of one of their neighbors, these middle-aged men and
women look back at their younger selves with wisfulness and nostalgia.
The novel traces Adi Patel's disintegration into alcoholism; indicts
Dosamai, the neighborhood gossip; delineates the romantic betrayal of
Soli Contractor; and tells the story of the twin tragedies that befall
Tehmi Engineer, a reclusive widow. At the heart of this bittersweet
novel is Rusi Bilimoria, a disillusioned businessman who struggles to
make sense of his life and hold together his community.

"Thrity
Umrigar has an acute ear for dialogue, and a gift for unmasking the
complexities of personal relationships. As she sifts through her characters'
personalities she dredges up layers of envy, hope, bitterness, grudges,
regret, joy, and the glue of shared memory that binds these people
in unexpected ways."
---Bapsi Sidhwa, author of Cracking India
"Bombay Time's wonderful cast of characters and their tragically
funny stories stay with you long after you finish reading this bittersweet
novel. Thrity Umrigar's heart is as big as her homeland, and this
is a beautiful book."
--Brad Watson, author of Last Days of the Dog-Men
